Quick answer:

DIY works best when final volume and desired nicotine strength are fixed before base and shots are added.

Role of the base

Base provides volume and viscosity – flavour and nicotine are separate decisions

A neutral base forms the liquid foundation used with suitable flavour concentrates or longfills. Nicotine shots can be added when a nicotine-containing final mixture is intended.

Before mixing, identify which components are already in the bottle and which still have to be added.

PG / VG

PG and VG balance changes viscosity and device behaviour

Propylene glycol (PG) is thinner, while vegetable glycerin (VG) is more viscous. The ratio therefore affects how easily liquid feeds through a pod or coil and how the setup behaves at different power levels.

Very thick mixes are not ideal for every small pod. The specific device and coil guidance should take priority over generic ratios.

Nicotine calculation

Always calculate nicotine strength against the complete final volume

The key values are final volume, desired final strength and the declared concentration of the nicotine shot.

Example: to make 60 ml at 3 mg/ml from a 20 mg/ml shot, 9 ml of shot contributes the required nicotine. The remaining final volume is completed with the components specified by the recipe or longfill.

Product roles

Base, nicotine shot, longfill and finished e-liquid are not interchangeable

A base mainly provides neutral volume, a nicotine shot contributes nicotine, a longfill provides a pre-dosed flavour component and a finished 10 ml liquid is already ready for use.

Knowing which product type you are holding prevents double-dosing flavour or miscalculating the final strength.

Storage & handling

Keep nicotine-containing components clearly labelled and safely stored

Keep all components in their original or clearly labelled containers and follow the warning information on the product. Nicotine-containing liquids must be kept away from children and used only as intended.

Do not rely on memory for repeated recipes: note final volume, target strength and the exact base or shot variant used.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does PG/VG mean?

PG stands for propylene glycol and VG for vegetable glycerin. Their ratio influences viscosity, vapour production and how easily liquid feeds through a given coil.

How do I calculate nicotine shots?

Use final volume × desired strength ÷ shot strength. For 60 ml at 3 mg/ml using a 20 mg/ml shot, that equals 9 ml of shot.

Is base the same as finished e-liquid?

No. Base is a neutral mixing component. A finished e-liquid already contains the intended flavour and, where applicable, the declared nicotine strength.

Can I use a high-VG base in every pod?

Not necessarily. Thick liquids may feed poorly in some small pods. Check the device and coil guidance before choosing a very high-VG mixture.

How should nicotine shots be stored?

Keep them securely closed, clearly labelled, away from children and in accordance with the product instructions.
